1. Same Sex Marriage Legalized in New York
Supporter applauded as the gay couples got married in Manhattan on the day the same-sex marriage was officially authorized in New York. The adoption of the same-sex marriage law by the sixth and largest state in the United States has stirred up people who were against gay marriages. Opponents filed the first case against the Senate of New York for disregarding their own procedure when it allowed the legalization of the said law. The states who also chose to legalize same-sex marriage are Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Washington, D.C.
2. Ocean’s Life in Danger
Scientists said that the oceans are at their worst state and the marine species are in the danger of entering the point of extinction. This is due to pollution, over fishing and climate change. The International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO) met and gathered the experts to discuss matters that are already affecting humanity. Their forum finished with an image that the changes they observed were occurring quicker than they ever believed and one of these changes is the melting down of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets.
3. The World’s Youngest Smoker
Tong Liangliang is a six-year-old Chinese boy who was taught by his father to smoke at a very tender age. His father believed that smoking would ease the pain triggered by hernia. Tong was at the age of 18 months when he smoked his first cigarette. The father was not conscious of the seriousness of his son’s condition until the child increased the quantity of cigarettes he smoked. Tong is currently undergoing therapy.
4. The New Zealand Quake
A chain of earthquakes has struck the City of Christchurch in New Zealand that destroyed the city and killed more than hundreds of people. About 10,000 houses and 1,000 commercial buildings will have to be destroyed as an effect of the quake. Some 50,000 people were left without electricity. A magnitude of 6.0 was the strongest tremor to ever hit the city, which resulted to the evacuation of buildings. Since the earthquake that struck the city, thousands of residents have moved to other parts of New Zealand and Australia.
5. Earth having two Suns
The Senior Lecturer of Physics at the University of Southern Queensland, Dr. Brad Carter, outlined a situation wherein one of the brightest stars is losing mass and therefore, is going to collapse. This star will become super-nova because it may run out of fuel. If this will occur, we will be seeing a sun for weeks and there will be no night during said period. The blast may cause the creation of a black hole 1300 light years from earth. This scenario is said to happen next year or the following years to come.
6. Cannibals in Pakistan Arrested
The people in a distant town in Pakistan were shocked when two brothers, Arif Ali and Farman Ali, were arrested in Kohar Kalan village for being suspected of eating human flesh. These brothers get dead bodies in graveyards and eat them. They were charged with cannibalism by a court in Eastern Pakistan. Their act was caught after the body of a newly deceased woman was missing from her grave. The police cannot find any reason for the two to resort to cannibalism. The two seem to be in good physical and mental state. They were found to be living with their sister who has an unstable mental condition in an isolated place. The two admitted that they ate dogs before trying human meat. Neighbors were shocked, as they never thought that the two brothers are capable of doing such acts.
7. The Japan Earthquake, which Resulted to a Tsunami
The Tohoku earthquake, a 9.0 magnitude undersea megathrust earthquake hit Japan, which triggered the tsunami, destroyed infrastructures, and killed hundreds of people in Japan. This also caused a number of nuclear accidents in Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant that resulted to the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of residents. This quake was said to be one of the five most powerful earthquakes in the world.
8. Amy Winehouse Found Dead
The Grammy-winning singer was discovered dead at her home in North London. Drug overdose has believed to be the cause of her death. Reports said that she has been battling for drug addiction for years having been admitted to a rehabilitation center for drug problems as well as heroin use.
9. Osama Bin Laden Killed
Obama announced that Osama Bin Laden has been killed. It was said that Bin Laden was at the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. A group of American soldiers carried out the operation. After the firefight, they executed Bin Laden and took custody of his body. A DNA testing has proven that it was Bin Laden.
10. Mother Acquitted for the Murder of Her Daughter
Casey Anthony was acquitted for the charge of murdering her 2-year-old daughter by a jury of the Orange County Florida. The trial attracted the public interest. Prosecutors alleged that Casey killed her daughter with chloroform and dumped her body in the woods.
