Microsoft has discovered an issue in Windows 7 RTM where users searching via search box in Windows 7 for programs and files, Windows 7 returns incorrect results. The issues is widely reported in Windows 7 & Windows Server 2008 R2. The option “Search Files & programs” under start menu definitely hany way to quickly locate files and programs.
But in certain circumstances the search results returned to users are not exactly what users are looking for. Only the category headings of the categorized search results are displayed, such as Programs, Control Panel, and Documents. Additionally, if you click the displayed category headings, nothing happens.
Fortunately Microsoft has fixed this issue in service pack 1 of Windows 7 but for those who don’t want to deploy SP1 now may download the hotfix released by Microsoft to fix this issue or follow the below workaround posted by Microsoft. This workaround involves modifying registry.

Fix Incorrect Results Displayed While Searching in Windows 7

1. Press Windows + R ley and type regedit in Run box.
2. Now locate follow subkey in left pan of registry editor
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Explorer\FolderTypes\{ef87b4cb-f2ce-4785-8658-4ca6c63e38c6}
4. Right-click this subkey, and then select Delete.
5. Restart the computer for changes to take effect.
